When it comes to Developing EI – How Savvy are you?

Do you react well to pressure?
Do you readily form and maintain new relationships?
Are you self-motivated and adaptable?
Are you able to deal adeptly with conflict?

Developing EI
Developing EI is something that can be done.  It is about our ability to understand and manage our own emotions, to interpret and deal with the emotions of others, and use this knowledge to manage relationships and adjust our response to different people, situations or environments.

Where does the term Emotional Intelligence come from?
Emotional Intelligence is not new – one of the major theorists Daniel Goleman wrote his book, Emotional Intelligence in 1995 and it spent more than one and a half years on The New York Best Seller list.

Why is it important?
Learning to enhance your EI and be more flexible in your approach, can give you the competitive edge in leading and managing in todays complex world. It is also equally helpful in our personal life.

Research has consistently supported a link between EI and job performance, leadership effectiveness, team motivation, morale and general wellbeing.

Understanding more about EI
Our preferred model and approach is founded on a five factor model of EI: (Wellbeing, Self-Control, Emotionality, Sociability & Independence). These five factors have been demonstrated to reflect our beliefs about our emotional abilities and these are strong predictors of a wide range of behaviours that are vital in the workplace (job performance, job satisfaction, job stress, leadership, organisational citizenship, organisational commitment, teamwork, etc.).  Developing EI is assisted greatly by focusing in on these five factors.

Measuring your EI
There are several diagnostics available to measure your EI.

Our preferred tool is the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire – TEIQue (pronounced TQ) supplied by our partner Thomas International which provides a reliable and valid measure of where you are against the five traits.

Developed by K V Petrides and London Psychometric Laboratory in University College, London, it is a well researched and validated psychometric instrument that is registered with the British Psychological Society.

The TEIQue, is uniquely positioned, as its’ interpretation relies on determining whether an under or over supply of any particular trait is required for successful performance in each particular role.  As with any psychometric diagnostic report, we believe that it is essential that the tool is both reliable and valid; and that the provider offers one-to-one feedback to interpret your results and ensure you understand them correctly.

In developing EI it is important therefore to gain a personal insight into where you are now, having a plan to focus on EI strengths and areas for improvement and to monitor progress.
