Emotional Intelligence (EI)
At mind change, we consider that gaining an increased awareness of our own and others behaviour is a starting point to enable change in becoming more flexible and adaptable. By learning to respond differently to the challenges of different people, contexts and situational demands, we can be more successful in work and life and more adept at dealing with stress, leading others, managing conflict and change.
Emotional Intelligence has been around since 1995 when one of the major theorists, Daniel Goleman wrote his book Emotional Intelligence and at that time it spent more than one-and-a-half years on The New York Times bestseller list. Today, over 20 years later and the appetite to understand and improve our emotional intelligence remains.
EI has been described as an individual’s capacity to recognise their own and other people’s emotions, and their ability to use this emotional information to guide how they think, respond and behave.
Benefits of enhancing Emotional Intelligence and awareness:
- Increase morale and motivation
- Develop top talent
- Recognise other peoples’ emotions
- Improve difficult relationships
- Manage stressful situations and remain cool under pressure
- Address poor performance
Our approach to EI, is founded on 5 main Factors of Emotional Intelligence based on The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue):
Well-Being – A healthy mind and body promotes optimism, happiness and self esteem.
Self-Control – Ability to regulate emotions and impulses; thinking before acting and managing pressure and stress.
Emotionality – Being aware of how other people perceive you and how you react to others.
Sociability – Strong communication and interaction with colleagues.
Independence – Being flexible in your approach to life, work, new environments and different situations.
What the Research Says
Extensive research has consistently demonstrated the link between emotionally intelligence and a greater capacity and capability to lead, manage, and perform successfully in today’s competitive and complex world.
The evidence supports that EI can be learned and enhanced (Brackett et al., 2011) and that it can lead to increased job satisfaction and reduced levels of burnout (Brackett et al., 2010). Indeed, Siegling, Nielsen & Petrides (2014) found that it was a requirement for effective performance in leadership and management positions.
